Reach Out Centre

More than just a Soup Kitchen

The Reach Out Centre is a community meal program/drop-in centre located at 61 Nickel Street in Port Colborne. The program runs three days a week on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.  Doors open at 10:00 am for light breakfast, coffee, crafts, cooking circles and camaraderie. A nutritious lunch is served at noon. Educational information sessions, which include speakers from various social service agencies, occur once a month. The Reach Out Centre is funded by the United Way of South Niagara and donations from the community.

The success of The Reach Out Centre is largely dependent on efforts of our volunteer workforce, many of whom are guests at the kitchen. Working at the centre is fun and rewarding. Not only do our volunteers gain valuable transferable skills but they get the intrinsic satisfaction of belonging to a team involved in a very worthwhile project.

"I am one of the many volunteers here at the Reach Out Centre. I've been helping out for over three years now. I am a 43 year old woman who is not able to work at a paid job due to my physical limitations. Working here I am able to feel as though I am giving back to society. I am very well accepted here. I can work at my own pace and not feel judged in any way. We work as a team. If someone is not able to do something, someone else will come along and do what needs to be done. I am very glad to be part of this group who touches so many lives in so many ways."

East Village Clean Up
Each spring guests at the Reach Out Centre team up with neighbours from the area and leaders from the City of Port Colborne to take part in a good old fashioned neighbourhood clean up. The guests at the Centre are eager to participate as a way to thank the community, which always supports the program. The one-day blitz began in April 2004 and has been a tradition ever since. The Reach Out Centre and local businesses in the East Village provide a breakfast or lunch and an average of 35 people come out and support the event.

Community Gardens
As a way to take pride in the East Village Neighbourhood, the volunteers at the Reach Out Centre embarked on a beautification project. With the help of Plants Choice - A Division of Compost Management, a perennial bed was planted around the building and a new site for a vegetable garden was established at the back of the property. Now, our guests are gaining valuable skills, transplanting perennials for their own properties and growing their own produce to support their families and assist with the 10,000 meals we serve each year.
